Conservation for Today, Tomorrow and the Future

After the dry years of the thirties, wind erosion became a serious problem. Soil piled in the fence lines and road ditches prompted local citizens in Beadle County to discuss forming a group to address erosion concerns. Fortunately, the law establishing conservation districts was passed in 1937. Beadle County Conservation District was established in 1942, the 29th conservation district in the state of South Dakota.

Beadle County is located in east central South Dakota, along the James River and consists of 807,400 acres of land mostly devoted to agriculture. Beadle County is also home to the South Dakota State Fair. The new turkey processing plant is up and running and has plans for expansion in the near future.

Ravine Lake Usage Up!

Today the scene at Ravine Lake is far removed from the cattails on the beach just a few years ago. Since the implementation of the Ravine Lake Watershed Project, recreational use at Ravine Lake has flourished. The concessionaire reports increased traffic to his business as well.

The Ravine Project was funded in the fall of 1994. The improvements that were completed in the watershed have certainly had an effect on water quality in the lake. Prior to the project, cattle were found actually standing in the lake. A fencing project was initiated at the north end of Fifteenth Street and the cattle were given an alternative water source by digging a well and installing fences. Trees were planted on the riparian area and grass has been established. The grass and trees serve as a filter for sediments that might otherwise have entered the lake.

The dredging phase of the project created greater depth to the lake, which improved fish habitat and increases fishing opportunities for area sportsmen. The Parks & Recreation Department conducted water testing on a weekly basis. The results were outstanding!

Beadle Conservation District in partnership with the City of Huron Lake and Riverfront Committee are proud to have had a instrumental part in making this happen. Volunteers played a big role in completing the project. Ravine Lake will be a valuable recreational spot for many years to come.
