The Charles Mix Conservation District was established in 1943 and originally named the Academy Conservation District. In 1945, the rest of the county was added and the name was changed in 1954.

Charles Mix County lies in south-central South Dakota along the Missouri River east of the Fort Randall Dam. The district has nearly 100 miles of river frontage. A wide variety of soils exist, but along the Missouri River the soil is chiefly rolling to steep clays and suitable primarily for range and livestock production. To the east, the land is gently rolling to fairly level with silty clay loams which are good for small grain and row crop production. Irrigation is common along the reservoir and above aquifers located in the eastern and northern parts of the county.
Locally Led Success
Tree Planting and Erosion Control
Charles Mix Conservation District has always been very active in tree planting and tree care services. Since 1986, the district has planted 4,500 acres or 1.9 million new trees.

The district is also the sponsor of many RC&D structures that protect public and private property from erosion damage. The Spring-Bull Creek project was a multi-million dollar project that addressed the erosion concerns of an entire watershed. Recently, Charles Mix Conservation District obtained grant funding to complete a study of every watershed and lake in the county to determine the condition and needs of the water bodies. Work has begun with the help of a SDACD employee to assist landowners in establishing conservation practices to address those needs.
