Established in 1967, Faulk County Conservation District lies in the north-central part of South Dakota. Faulk County was named after Andrew J. Faulk, the third Governor of the Dakota Territory. It was established by the Territorial Legislature in 1873.

It has a total area of 638,720 acres, which includes 2,000 acres of water. About 55 percent of the acreage in the county is cropland, and 45 percent supports native grass.

Locally Led Success

Lake Faulkton Restoration

In 1994, the Faulk Conservation District received a grant from the Conservation Commission to begin the assessment phase of Lake Faulkton. After all the testing was complete it was determined that something could be done. Many practices were completed during the beginning stages of the grant.

In 1999, the district began putting together grant applications for funding the implementation stage of the restoration project. In 2000, the district received approval for grants from the Conservation Commission, EPA 319 and Consolidated Water Facilities. The district, NRCS, Lake Faulkton Board, local business and individuals have contributed to help in making this project a success.

Dredging began in July 2002 and was completed in October 2004. Reclamation of the holding ponds will be completed in 2005. Other practices being implemented are tree plantings, pipelines, tanks, dugout cleanouts, planned grazing systems, and an ag waste system. The goal of this project is to clean the watershed area and make a cleaner, healthier lake for habitat, fishing and boating. Without the grants this project would not be possible. This project is in its final stages with completion planned for spring of 2006.
