The Gregory County Conservation District was formed in 1941. Gregory County is located in the south central part of South Dakota. It has a total area of 675,885 acres or about 1,056 square miles, which includes about 22,680 acres of water. About 16,975 acres in the county are administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs as Indian Trust Land. This land is intermingled with private land throughout the county. Coyote, cottontail, fox, deer and upland game birds, such as bobwhite, grouse, turkey, prairie chicken and ring neck pheasant are the chief wildlife resources. Bass, bluegill, northern pike, perch and other fish inhabit most of the permanent water areas. Lake Francis Case and the Missouri River provide excellent camping, fishing, and boating opportunities. The mission of Gregory County Conservation District is to provide leadership in conserving the county's natural resources by assisting its residents to voluntarily develop a complete and economical sound conservation plan. |
