| Established
in 1947, Kingsbury County Conservation District lies in the heart of
east central South Dakota. Much like the state of South Dakota, the
county is split exactly in half with the Eastern portion consisting
of cropland and the Western section mostly range and grasslands. This
landscape provides the district with the unique opportunity to work
with landowners implementing conservation practices on both cropland
and grassland. In the 1980’s Lake Thompson went from a slough to the largest natural lake in the State. Kingsbury County is now the home of the newest State Park in the South Dakota, Lake Thompson Recreation Area. The family of popular author Laura Ingalls Wilder also made Kingsbury County their home. |

| Pasture Management |
||
| The Kingsbury County Conservation District supports pasture management which keeps grasslands heathy and productive and prevents overgrazing. In 1993, the district received a Coordinated Soil & Water Conservation Grant for the Spirit Lake Grassland Project. The concept of planned grazing systems grew among the producers in Kingsbury County as a result of this project. Water developments, cross fencing, new grass seeding and renovation of old pastures can be seen throughout the county. |
||
| In
the last 4 years, operators in the district received the “Excellence
in Range Management” award sponsored by the SD Society for Range
Management. Each summer, the District hosts a tour of the winning ranch
to showcase the importance of pasture management. The tours are well
attended with more operators developing interest in establishing systems
on their own farms. |
