The Miner County Conservation District has been involved in a “Water Quality Protection Project” for the last 6 years. Members of the community determined abandoned wells in the county to be a huge concern. After much discussion and planning the Miner County Conservation District wrote a grant to the Conservation Commission and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to help cover the costs of sealing these abandoned wells.

Two community members were trained to seal abandoned wells. The training was done through NRCS, DENR, and USD Geological Survey. The conservation district purchased the necessary equipment and supplies to complete the project. The project was publized and advertised in the area. Requests for sealing abandoned wells came into the conservation district.

To date the conservation district has been responsible for the sealing of 162 wells. The Miner County Commissioners have allotted a certain amount of the county funding to this project. Any amount not covered by the grants, producers, or county are covered by the conservation district.

The Miner County Conservation District is proud of the accomplishments of this project. The project was well received by members of the community.
