Conservation for Today, Tomorrow and the Future

Minnehaha Conservation District
2408 East Benson Road— Sioux Falls, SD 57104-7018
Phone: 605-336-1527—FAX: 605-330-4517

Minnehaha Conservation District was created in 1941 to administer soil, water and related resource conservation within the boundaries of Minnehaha County in Southeastern South Dakota. Sioux Falls, the largest city in South Dakota lies within Minnehaha County and is home to the beautiful Falls of the Big Sioux.

The topography in Minnehaha County is gently rolling. The Big Sioux River and its tributaries drain the county. The western one-third of the county has numerous sloughs and potholes and has predominately glacial till sub-soils. The central one-third has somewhat flatter land and contains the portions of the flood plains of the Big Sioux River, Skunk, Willow and Silver Creeks. The eastern one-third has predominately rolling hillsides of wind deposited loess. The eastern portion also contains outcropping of Sioux quartzite bedrock which is exposed in several sites along the Big Sioux River and the Pipestone, Split Rock and Beaver Creeks.

Minnehaha Conservation District is self-governed and has the authority to enter into working agreements with government agencies and private concerns to carry out its purposes. The district will consult with and make recommendations to all agencies or organizations helping to promote conservation activities in order to coordinate their activities into holistic conservation programs in Minnehaha County.

Dewey C. Gevik Outdoor Conservation Learning Center

The Dewey C. Gevik Outdoor Conservation Learning Area is being developed as an interpretive educational experience open to the public. This learning area will emphasize conservation practices, their design, function and beneficial relationship to the environment. Through the information presented, individuals will reach a greater understanding and appreciation for wildlife, the environment, and the need for conservation of our natural resources for future generations.

Conservation practices established at the learning area are: grassed waterway with rock weir structure, shelterbelt plantings, native grass plantings, and a natural wetland. These practices have been built and will be maintained to give the general public a better understanding of the benefits of conservation.
