SD
Rangeland Days is a two-day event held each year in late June or early
July. The event is open to students from ages 8 to 18 and includes a
program for adults. The goal is to teach students about a wide variety
of subjects from plant identification, plant morphology to rangeland
condition. It is both a competition and a learning experience for the
participants. Students are encouraged to bring displays and to participate
in the Rangeland Days talks. The Potter County Conservation District with the assistance of a volunteer committee lead the effort in organizing Rangeland Days. The mounumental task of planning includes finding entertainment, providing meals, seeking sponsors, ordering awards, and registering participants. This successful event, is sponsored by Potter County Conservation District, USDA NRCS, the SD Cooperative Extension Service, the Gettysburg School District, numerous local businesses and individuals assist in coordinating the successful program. Winners in the 14-18 year old talk receive the opportunity to present his/her presentation at the Society for Range Management's annual convention. The 2002 winner went to Casper, WY and the 2003 winner attended the convention in Salt Lake City, UT. In two years approximately 163 students and 20 adults have benefited from this program. |
