Conservation for Today, Tomorrow and the Future

Spink County Conservation District
25 1/2 Sixth Avenue West — Redfield, SD 57469-1117
Phone: 605-472-1437 — FAX: 605-472-3346
Located in East Central South Dakota, the Spink County Conservation District was established in 1941 and lies within and includes all land in Spink County. The James River flows through the county from north to south. The District boundaries coincide with the county boundaries. The county is 42 miles long by 36 miles wide and contains 965,958 acres. Of this acreage 785,000 acres are in cropland; 157,000 acres are in rangeland; and the remaining acres are in farmsteads, urban area and roads.

Spink County offers an abundance of outdoor recreation, including excellent pheasant and whitetail deer hunting. The James River and numerous lakes provide for fishing, boating and other water related activities. The Spink County Conservation District provides many services to the producers, such as tree planting, fabric application, tree cleaning, grass seeding, spraying, and handplant sales. The district also has started an outdoor classroom where students and producers can come and look at various species of trees and grasses.

Locally Led Success
Turtle Creek/Redfield Lake Project
Many conservation practices were implemented through out the county during the 1.5 million dollar Turtle Creek/Redfield Lake Project. Ag waste systems, moving feedlots, alternative water sources, permanent grass seedings, grazing management fencing, exclusion fencing, riparian buffers, bio-control releases and bank stabilizations were some of the best management practices that were installed.

Two hundred sixty-seven thousand cubic yards of sediment were dredged from Redfield Lake with an additional 138,461 cu. yds. being removed with land based equipment. The 32 acre pasture area that was used for the sediment ponds has been reclaimed and is again being used to graze cattle and horses. With grass seeding, tree planting, installation of a boat dock, picnic shelters, playground equipment and camper pads, the continuing improvement on the immediate public land next to the Redfield Lake now provides a wonderful recreation area.
