Tree Planning & Selection

In South Dakota, trees are sold and planted across the state by each of the 69 local conservation districts. In the spring of 2002, conservation districts planted more than
4 million trees on over 10,000 acres of land. You can contact your local conservation district for all of your tree planting needs. The conservation districts work closely with USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service staff to provide technical assistance in the design and planning of windbreaks and shelterbelts.

Selecting the right trees and shrubs for your location is important in establishing a windbreak. Homeowners need to consider proper selection of tree or shrub species for the conditions on the site. Some species are better suited to wet conditions while others prefer drier climates. You'll also want to consider the height and diameter of trees when selecting the plants. The North Dakota Tree Handbook is an excellent source of information on species of trees and shrubs that are also suitable to South Dakota.

Diversity is also important. While evergreens can provide year-round shelter, using a mix of deciduous trees and shrubs will provide greater habitat for wildlife and create more visual interest on your property. A diverse species mix will also help control diseases and insects.

Visit our Backyard Conservation page for more information on planting specimen trees and selecting trees and shrubs to provide habitat for birds and other wildlife.

When planting trees, remember to look up for overhead utility lines and call before you dig for the location of underground utilities.
