| Located Northeast of Lake Preston, SD, the Carlson management intensive grazing demonstration site consists of five pastures: four contiguous and one separated from the others by a road. A large tire tank that is connected to rural water waters the four contiguous paddocks. A dugout waters the pasture south of the road. |

| Forty cow/calf pairs were turned into the Northeast paddock on May 15, 2005 and one bull was turned out May 20. For most of the season, the cattle followed a ten-day rotation through four of the paddocks. The fifth paddock (SE) was not grazed until October 15 because part of it had been planted to corn to prepare the land for the planting of a more desirable species of grass. The predominant species is currently Kentucky Bluegrass. Carlson wishes to plant it to cool season grass/legume blend such as Pubescent wheatgrass, orchardgrass, alfalfa and meadow brome. | |

| 2005 was an average year for precipitation with good rains early on, followed by a dry July, and significant rains again in August and September. This picture, taken in mid June, shows how full the creek was. There was also standing water in many places at that time. | |
