Water Protection
We all live in a watershed. A watershed, which is also called a drainage basin, is the area in which all water, sediment and dissolved materials drain from the land into a common body of water, such as a river, lake or ocean. A watershed includes all the surrounding land from which the water drains. This can be an area as large as the Missouri River drainage basin or as small as a backyard. (Learn more about SD's watersheds.)

Water quality is critically impacted from every activity that goes on within that watershed. Agriculture, mining, forestry, and construction practices can greatly affect the water. Even everyday activities in urban areas can significantly impact the quality of water.

You can even start in your own backyard by monitoring fertilizer and pesticide usage. Mulching your plants will limit the amount of water that evaporates and will also control weeds. By planting drought resistant and native plant species you conserve water. You can reduce pollution and protect water quality by identifying, regulating, monitoring and controlling potential pollutants. Even you can make a difference.

We all recognize the need for healthy water systems within urban and rural areas and many are taking steps to improve the quality in impacted watersheds. In South Dakota, conservation districts work closely in developing, and implementing locally-led projects to improve water quality and reduce pollution. Planting buffers and managing nutrients are just two of many conservation practices promoted by the districts to protect water quality.
