Half-Day Working Lands Workshop

📍 Kirkpatrick Ranch - 23942 Robbs Rd, Midland, SD
Get a hands-on look at practical strategies for getting more from your land while building a more resilient grazing operation. The workshop will cover grazing tame grass fields instead of haying, using cover crop mixtures for grazing, addressing weed pressure, extending the grazing season, improving soil health and water infiltration, and recognizing and managing woody encroachment on rangeland.

Native Prairie Tour & Management

📍 Schurman Game Production Area - Approximately 2 miles south of Waverly, SD
Explore South Dakota's native grasslands during a guided tour with South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks and The Nature Conservancy. The tour will cover the effects of a spring 2026 prescribed burn, prairie restoration techniques, native prairie plant identification, grassland establishment and management practices, weed management strategies, native seed harvesting, and open discussion about habitat management and conservation.

Grazing School

A three-day school focused on practical grazing strategies for Great Plains producers. Participants will learn how to set management goals, assess pasture health and grazing impacts, manage stocking rates, design fence and water systems, and learn from grazing experts and fellow producers.

Soil Health School
🕤 7:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. CDT
📍 Abbey of the Hills - 46561 147th St., Marvin, SD
The 2026 South Dakota Soil Health School will be held Sept. 15-17 at David Kruger’s Farm near Twin Brooks, SD, and the Abbey of the Hills near Marvin, SD. The agenda will feature classroom style presentations from producers and technical experts from across the state and region, as well as hands-on experiences in the field. Area producers will also share their challenges and successes with various methods for improving soil health. Individual registration costs $150, and additional registrations from the same operation cost $75.

Woody Encroachment Field Tour
🕤 5:30 p.m.
📍 Oacoma, SD
A field tour focused on woody encroachment treatment options. Experts and producers will highlight practical woody plant control methods, including prescribed fire and mechanical and chemical control of eastern red cedar and other problematic species invading South Dakota grasslands.

From Arby’s in Oacoma, travel west 1 mile on Hwy 16
Turn left and travel south 3.5 miles down Cooper School Rd/ Co Rd 6
At the fork in the road, stay left and keep traveling 3 miles south down 337th Ave
Turn right and travel 0.5 miles west on 252nd St.

Volunteer Event: Seed Collection
🕘 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
📍Samuel H. Ordway Prairie Preserve - 35333 115th St., Leola, SD
Join The Nature Conservancy at the Samuel H. Ordway Jr. Prairie Preserve to collect native plant seeds that will be distributed across the preserve. Participants should be prepared to walk in prairie conditions and are encouraged to bring gardening or leather gloves. Snacks and water will be provided. RSVP by Sept. 18. In case of bad weather, the backup date is Oct. 10.

Prescribed Fire Workshop
🕘 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
📍Menno, SD
A hands-on prescribed fire workshop hosted by Pheasants Forever and the Southeast Dakota Prescribed Burn Association. Participants will help implement multiple prescribed burns while learning about prescribed fire equipment, ignition and suppression techniques, and using fire to reduce eastern red cedar encroachment. Open to landowners, Prescribed Burn Association members, resource professionals and anyone interested in learning more about prescribed fire. Pre-registration required.
