How do you value water? Whether it’s for drinking, farming, recreation, or flood protection, your perspective matters.

South Dakota State University (SDSU), in partnership with SDSU Extension, the East Dakota Water Development District, and the Vermillion Water Development District, is conducting a statewide survey to better understand how South Dakotans view, use, and manage their water resources.

This initiative will guide future research, policy, and conservation strategies by giving communities across the state a chance to share their concerns and priorities, especially as we face increasing pressure from drought, flooding, and water quality issues.

Topics in the Survey Include:

  • Perceptions of current water protection and conservation practices

  • Primary water uses across residential, agricultural, and industrial sectors

  • Community preparedness for water-related events like droughts and floods

  • Public awareness of state water programs and support systems
